PLAY!

A playful community park and adaptive retail space in Edgemere, NY. This area struggles with flooding. This project goes beyond the site (red dot) to create a burm design which protects the coast from the water but it also acts as a fun area for the community to walk, skateboard, kayak, rock climb and more, with some indoor spaces which can be used as classrooms or storm shelters. PLAY has over a dozen adaptable ‘kit of parts’ pieces that can be moved, built, or taken down for different programs and desired use.

Design Goals

Block pieces (pink) are made of materials that absorb water. They can be moved and stacked, if needed, before a storm.
